Commute Times with Traffic is a browser extension that displays live traffic travel times for the routes you save, and suggests when to leave in order to avoid heavy traffic. This page explains exactly what the extension stores, what it sends, and to whom. In short: your data stays between your browser and Google, and nothing is sent to the developer.
What the extension stores
The following is saved in your own browser storage and is not accessible to the developer:
- Your routes — the labels you choose and the Point A / Point B values you enter, which may be addresses, place names or coordinates.
- Your Google Maps API key — the key you supply so the extension can request traffic data. It is your key, for your own Google Cloud project.
- Your preferences — traffic badge mode, background refresh interval, and best-time-to-leave settings.
- Cached results — the most recent travel times, distances and traffic estimates, so the extension can display something instantly when opened.
Preferences and routes may sync through Chrome's own sync storage, which means they follow your signed-in Chrome profile across your devices. That syncing is performed by Chrome, not by the developer.
What the extension sends, and to whom
The extension sends your saved route addresses to the Google Distance Matrix
API at maps.googleapis.com, using your API key, in order to obtain
travel time, distance and traffic estimates. Those requests are governed by
Google's
Privacy Policy. Google is the only third party that processes this data, because
Google is the provider of the traffic data.
No developer-operated server exists. The developer cannot see your routes, your location or your API key.
What the extension does not do
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, advertising or tracking of any kind.
- No reading of the web pages you visit. The extension has no content scripts and does not collect browsing history or page content.
- No selling, renting or transferring of user data to third parties.
- No collection of health, financial, personal communications or account authentication data.
- No remote code. All logic ships inside the extension package.
Your control
- Remove any saved route at any time in the extension's settings.
- Export a backup of your routes and preferences, or import one, from the settings page.
- Removing the extension deletes the data it stored locally.
Children
The extension is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
